But now it's time to say our farewells to our old friend Joomla 1.0. As of July 22, 2009, the Joomla 1.0.x series will no longer be supported. As a user, is it required that you upgrade from Joomla 1.0.x? Absolutely not since security upgrades will be supported until this date.
As you can read in the article, Joomla 1.0 will still be supported with security patches until July 22, 2009. If you have an old version of Joomla now would be a good time to make sure it is up to date, or maybe even consider if it is time to upgrade to 1.5. Upgrading wont neccesarily mean that you will have to "start all over" on your site.
